Ap Physics study guide for Quantum and Nuclear Test

Here is the list of topics for the test


1.  Given an photon of  a certain frequency and knowing the stopping potential, solve for the Ke max of the ejected photoelectrons.

Understand how to express in eV units as well as in Joules.   ( to express in joules multiply volts by charge per electron)

2. Apply conservation of momentum to photons striking electrons.  Be able to explain what happens to the wavelength of a photon after it strikes an electron.

3.  Calculate wavelength or frequency of light emitted associated with the movement of the electron from a high to low quantum number.

4.  Calculate  work function given cutoff frequency  for a photon

5.  Balance a nuclear equation by understanding total reactant protons and neutrons is conserved.

6.  Select the higher energy photon based on two wavelengths

7.Calculate de Broglie wavelength from an electron's Kinetic Energy in eV.  or in Joules

8.  Find the isotopes of an element given the atomic number and the number of neutrons in the isotope

9.  Find binding energy of a particle given mass of the bound together particle using the constituent components.

Cap 11 and 13 Physics Test Waves and Reflection Test Review


Numbered Heads Instructions

1. Form into the designated groups

2. Take out one full sheet of paper per group and list the name of the group at the top. Then list the names of the group members and place numbers next to each name (1, 2, 3…..If four members then write 4 also). It doesn’t matter who gets what number.

3. Hand the paper to the instructor. It will be used for assessment and graded.

4. Begin reviewing/ learning the listed concepts. Make up sample questions related to the concept. Try and figure out what question the teacher will ask. Time is limited; so don’t waste it!

5. Once you understand the concepts make sure each group members also understand by assessing them. Do not ask yes or no assessment questions.

Good Assessment. “Sam, could you show me how to do number three on the list?”

Poor Assessment. “Do you guys all know it?”

6. When the instructor calls a number randomly (ex. = 3) the three will go to a designated area alone and respond to a similar question. Make sure they have something to write with and a calculator. After they leave begin studying the next set of concepts for the next round.

7. After a short amount of time the person will then return to the group and their answer will be graded by the teacher and given to the entire group as a communal score.

8. The returning group member may be called again so they should receive extra instruction to help get caught up.

9. The scores are added at the end to determine winners. The top three groups receive extra points on the test.

1.   Solve for Spring constant using hooke's Law.  Be able to find restoring force using a hanging mass.

2.  For Spring System and pendulum know when acceleration, Force, velocity, KE and PE are maximum and minimum.  See page 375 text

3.  Rearrange Period of a pendulum to solve for length

4.  Calculate period given frequency and vice versa.

5.  Find spring constant in a mass spring system given mass  and the number of times it oscillates in 10 seconds.

6.  Explain the difference between transverse and longitiudinal waves

7.  Explain constructive and destructive wave interference

8.  Find the speed of a wave given wavelength and frequency.

9.  Find the waveleagth of radio given the frequency .

10.  Draw image position for both concave and convex mirror  all situations.

11.  Calculate image position with mirror equation concave and convex mirrors

12.  Solve for magnification and image height given radius,   and object position and height.

13.   explain what color a pigmented object will appear in a certain color light.

AP Physics test Review Waves and Light

Here are the topics covered On the AP Physics Test of waves and Light on Friday.  The format will be short answer.


1.  Using V = wavelength X Frequency to solve for an unknown.

2.  Drawing harmonics 1-5 for three situations fixed, fixed boundary, fixed free, or free free  and then solving for wavelength given length of the media.

3.  Use Doppler effect to solve for the new frequency when sound  source is moving away or towards you at a given speed.  Possible conversion required.

4.    Solve for velocity of a wave on a string given linear density and a known mass hanging from the string causing Tension
