Numbered Heads Chap 10 Review


Chap 10 Chemistry Test Study Concepts

1.     Convert grams of a molecule (CO2) to moles of CO2.   Practice with other molecular formulas.


2.     Convert moles of a formula to grams of a formula (Calcium Carbonate)


3.     Convert Liters of a  gas at STP to moles of the gas .  Ex N2 gas

4.     Convert grams of a gas at STP to liters of a gas at STP ex Hydrogen H2 gas

5.     Convert Liters of a gas at STP to mass  of the gas at STP  Ex H2O gas

6.     Find the # atoms of an element Ex H, in a certain amount  of moles of a molecular  formula  (C6H6)

7.     Balance an equation

8.     Find the percent composition  of each element in a compound given the formula of the compound

9.     Find the percent composition of each element given the mass of each element in the compound but not the formula

10. Find the empirical formula from example 9 (You have figured out percent composition already)

11.   Find the molecular formula  from # 10 (empirical figured out already  given the molecular mass

12. Given the empirical formula find the molecular formula given the molecular mass.

CP Physics Fluid Concepts for Monday test

Fluid Concepts

1.     Find the density in kg/meters cubed  of regular and irregular shaped objects using formulas for volume when given dimensions in centimeter or millimeters.   Ex 50 kg  spherical rock with 200 mm diameter.  Or 10 kg cube 50 cm on each side.  Irregular objects would require displacement in water  data to find volume.  Ex Vol 1 = .000423 m cubed and v2 =  .000560 m cubed  and its mass is 20 kg

2.    Find the weight of an object placed on a raft on water where the dimensions of the raft are known ( ex 3m X 1m X .5 m)   and the depth that you sink in water when loaded is known.  Ex  2.0 cm.


3.    Find a buoyant force of a sunken object given the weight in air and the apparent or net weight in the fluid.


4.  Find the density   of the object in #3 given the density of the fluid and the results from #3.

5.  Find the new velocity of a fluid in a pipe of known diameter after coming from another diameter where the velocity was known.   Ex  1” pipe at 4.0 m/s   to ½ inch diameter pipe.

6.  Find gauge pressure given total pressure and atmospheric pressure


7.  Find the force exerted on a hydraulic lift where the radius of both pistons is known as is the weight of the object to be lifted


8.  Explain the physics of sailing.  Specifically, explain how a sailboat goes forward best when wind blows from the side.  You must explain with diagrams and bernoulli’s principle and vector analysis and explain the relevant parts of the boat  like hull, sail, keel.


9.  Find the depth  in a particular fluid like alcohol or water where the pressure is a multiple of atmospheric.  Ex 20 X atmospheric

Chemistry Numbered Heads Review Chap 9

1. Form into the designated groups

2. Take out one full sheet of paper per group and list the name of the group at the top. Then list the names of the group members and place numbers next to each name (1, 2, 3…..If four members then write 4 also). It doesn’t matter who gets what number.

3. Hand the paper to the instructor. It will be used for assessment and graded.

4. Begin reviewing/ learning the listed concepts. Make up sample questions related to the concept. Try to imagine what question the teacher will ask. Time is limited; so don’t waste it!

5. Once you understand the concepts yourself locate the group members who do not understand  by assessing them. Do not ask yes or no assessment questions.

Good Assessment. “Sam, could you show me how to do number three on the list?”

Poor Assessment. “Do you guys all know it?”

Now teach them how to answer the questions you have formulated.  

6. When the instructor calls a number randomly (ex. = 3) the three will go to a designated area alone and respond to a similar question. Make sure they have something to write with and a calculator. After they leave begin studying the next set of concepts for the next round.

7. After a short amount of time the person will then return to the group and their answer will be graded by the teacher and given to the entire group as a communal score.

8. The returning group member may be called again so they should receive extra instruction to help get caught up.

9. The scores are added at the end to determine winners. The top three groups receive extra points on the test.



Chapter 9 concepts
1.  Know who loses and who gains electrons, anion  v cation,  and the types of compounds formed  in these combinations.   Also know whether anion or cation is listed first in the name.

2.  Know the names of all 40 polyatomic ions and charges.

3.  Know how to write the formula for a binary ionic compound given the name in stock or prefix system

4.  Know the latin roots for tin, iron and copper and the numeric prefixes 1-10

5.  Know how to write the formula for a binary molecular compound given the name in the  prefix system. 


6.  Be able to write the the name for either ionic or molecular compounds given the formula.

7.  Know how to name acids.  

8.  Know the difference between the laws of definite and multiple proportions including how multiple proportions are used

CP Physics Impulse momentum test review



     1.     Be able to calculate momentum using metric as well as English units.  Ex Find P if 120 kg deer                runs at 12 mi/hr.  



2   2.  Calculate change in momentum of Prob 1  if the deer speeds up and  is now going 24 mi/hr

3.  Find the Net force to make a watermelon stop in the water if dropped from a known height   and the mass, height and the time to stop it in the water are known. 
 You will need to use kinematics to get the velocity immediately before striking the water and then use impulse momentum to solve for the  braking  Force in the water to make it stop.


4   4.   Find final velocity of a known mass object , initially at rest  with a known force acting on it during a defined time period.  Use impulse momentum

   5.     Calcualte the impulse either directly using F and delta T or  indirectly by using m delta V

    6.      A known mass car cruising at a known velocity applies a known braking force  over a certain time.  Find the final velocity and the displacement.


7   7.   Solve for final velocity during an inelastic collision where masses and initial velocities a re known

8   8.   Find the final velocity of one object during an  elastic collision where initial velocity  and mass of both are known as well as final velocity of the other object.

Chemistry Ionic and Metallic bonding test Chap 7

Here is a summary of what is on the Chemistry Ionic and Metallic Test Chap 7:

1.  Find the number of valence electrons for an uncharged element given the full name not symbol.  Ex Tin

2.  Def of valence electrons  and why elements follow octet rule

3.  Max charge on an ion based on valence lecterns and octet rule

4.  Write out electron configurations for elements and ions.  Know hoes these are different

5.  State the charge on an ion when given the full name.  Ex Charge  on Cesium Ion

6.    Write the formula for the stable ion  given the name.  Understand that all metals form positive not negative ions.

7.  Write out the formula units for stable ionic compounds given the names of the ions.  Ex.  Aluminum and Sulfide   forms AL (2)   S (3)      2 and 3 are subscripts

8.  Know the def of an alloy, why they are important and ne able to site examples of alloys

9.  Know that any ion ending in "ice"  example nitride or sulfide is monoatomic  and can be figured out by using a periodic table.  Ex Nitride is -3 charge because it is in the third from the right group.    Sulfide is charges -2 because it is second from  the right not counting the noble gasses.   

10.  Know that ionic compounds are a neutral mix af anions and cations.  

11.  Be able to figure out the cation charge in a named ionic compound.  Ex  Find the charge on the cartoon in Magnessium sulfide

12.  What characteristics make metals good conductors?

13.  What is the difference between malleable and ductile?

14.  Explain the sea of electron model of metallic bonding including the free drift of electrons.
