Chemistry Cap 3 review Concepts



1.     Express a very small number or large number in correct scientific notation with correct sig figs  Know all the sig fig rules especially the zero rules

2.  Know how to multiply two sci notation numbers and round to correct sig figs.

3.      Know how to add or subtract and round using the rule  (not the same as multiplication

4.     know the difference between accuracy and precision and be able to provide examples


5.     be able to state the number of sig  figs in a number

6.     know how calibration affects accuracy, precision and reliability

7.     Interpret numbers to say if they are accurate or precise.

8.     Know the term estimated digit and be able to identify it .  Example which is the estimated digit in 0.809

Numbered Heads Review Chap 3 Quiz Vectors

1. Form into the designated groups

2. Take out one full sheet of paper per group and list the name of the group at the top. Then list the names of the group members and place numbers next to each name (1, 2, 3…..If four members then write 4 also). It doesn’t matter who gets what number.

3. Hand the paper to the instructor. It will be used for assessment and graded.

4. Begin reviewing/ learning the listed concepts. Make up sample questions related to the concept. Try to imagine what question the teacher will ask. Time is limited; so don’t waste it!

5. Once you understand the concepts yourself locate the group members who do not understand  by assessing them. Do not ask yes or no assessment questions.

Good Assessment. “Sam, could you show me how to do number three on the list?”

Poor Assessment. “Do you guys all know it?”

Now teach them how to answer the questions you have formulated.  

6. When the instructor calls a number randomly (ex. = 3) the three will go to a designated area alone and respond to a similar question. Make sure they have something to write with and a calculator. After they leave begin studying the next set of concepts for the next round.

7. After a short amount of time the person will then return to the group and their answer will be graded by the teacher and given to the entire group as a communal score.

8. The returning group member may be called again so they should receive extra instruction to help get caught up.

9. The scores are added at the end to determine winners. The top three groups receive extra points on the test.


Concept List For Chap 3

1.  Know how to do graphical method of vector addition without match using a ruler and protractor

2.  Know the difference between   C= A + B    and C = A-B  for vectors.   Basically the  -B means the direction of B is reversed producing a different angle for the resultant with the same size as A + B


3.  Know definitions of vector and scalar with examples

4.  Calculate a resultant given two perpendicular components

5.    Calculate a resultant given two perpendicular components and a third component parallel to one of the other components.

6.  Given  a resultant vector at theta from the x axis , describe the x component of the vector using trig and words.

7.    Given  a resultant vector at theta from the x axis, describe the y component  of the vector using trig and words.

8.  Given a series of vectors in a cartesian system, be able to pick out the ones that have horizontal components  and also be able to pick out the ones with y components

9.  Given the x components  of a vector and theta from the x axis ,  state in words how to find the resultant using the x component.

10.  Find the resultant for two non perpendicular  vectors using trig and vector addition.  (Not graphical)

1.  Design and solve a math problem where vi  and   "a" are known and the car stops.  Find the stopping distance.

13.  Using a v-t graph find the acceleration  at a specific time.  (Hint   ----The trick is that slope of a vt graph is acceleration at that moment)

1.  Know the difference between the terms open circuit, closed circuit and short circuit.

2.  Compare pot. dif. across a bulb and across a battery powering it.

3.  compare terminal voltage and electromotive force (EMF)

4.  find the equivalent resistance for resistors in series

5. In series how is the current for one resistor related to the total current?

6.  In series how is the pot. dif  for each  resistor related to the total pot. dif.?

7.  For resistors in parallel express of total current is related to individual current across each resistor.

8.  For parallel express  find Total resistance

9.  For two equal resistors in parallel, compare the equivalent resistance to that of the individual resistor.

10.  Use a complex diagram including individual resistances to get equivalent resistance.
